Keep your Child’s Identity Safe during Back-to-School Season
Transitioning from summer fun to the back-to-school routine can already be very stressful. However, you may not be aware that it can also create opportunities for thieves to steal identities. As you prepare for your kids to go back-to-school, here are a couple tips to help protect you and your family from identity theft.
Registration. To enroll your child in a school and/or after-school program, oftentimes a great deal of their personally identifiable information (PII) is required. From their full name, address and date of birth, to medical and Social Security numbers, make sure you understand what PII is mandatory and how the information is secured before you share it. Don’t share any PII unless absolutely necessary.
Shopping. Whether you’re picking up supplies or clothing, review what you carry in your wallet before you leave home. If you use a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) credit card (e.g. Visa payWAVE®, American Express® Expresspay, MasterCard® PayPass™ and/or Discover Zip,) make sure it’s secured in an RFID-blocking wallet. Don’t leave any PII in your car while you shop, and visually inspect credit card machines before you swipe to ensure there are no signs of tampering (i.e. the card reader is not loose and shows no sign of tampering).
Backpacks. Consider only having your child’s name written inside pockets of their belongings instead of the popular monogram on the exterior. This is to prevent a stranger from calling your child by name, which could potentially make a child not view the person as a stranger.
Identity thieves look to commit child identity theft because a child’s identity is rarely monitored and theft is usually not detected for years. Click here to learn more about protecting your child’s PII year round.
