Secure Your Life on the IoT

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a growing trend of connecting traditionally non-digital items (“things” like thermostats) to the Internet so that you can monitor and control them remotely. While it’s a quick and easy solution to monitor your “things” from something like a smartphone app, there are also security features that you need to research prior to investing in any Internet-enabled device.

  • Identify IoT devices that come with built-in security features. This means ensuring that the device’s software is compatible with your home network, requires a username and strong, alpha-numeric password and has firewalls to prevent hackers from accessing your home network using your Internet-enabled device. Additionally, you should look into how, if at all, the device’s manufacturer will have access to any personal data collected by your device.
  • Lockdown your home’s Internet connection. Enable WPA2 Encryption and regularly check that your router and IoT operating systems are up-to-date, in addition to monitoring your computer’s anti-virus software. You can learn all about WPA2 Encryption here.

As always, just as technology is constantly changing, so will the variety and security of IoT-enabled things. Be sure to stay on top of the latest updates and changes with your IoT devices!
